Personal values are like guiding lights that bring out the best of our humanity. One of the most widely-known values of all is the Golden Rule.<\/p>\n

The Golden Rule is an open-hearted expression of love that goes like this:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cDo unto others as you would have them do unto you.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

With a focus on love and happiness, doesn’t this statement warm your heart?<\/p>\n

This simple wisdom may also be the most profound personal value known to humankind.<\/strong> In his masterpiece, The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons<\/em>, Napoleon Hill described it as \u201cthe Guiding Star.\u201d It\u2019s not surprising that the Golden Rule is a fundamental personal value for most of the spiritual and philosophical traditions worldwide.<\/p>\n

The Surprising Absence of Personal Values<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s perplexing that religion and spirituality, with such lofty ideals, are at the forefront of so many conflicts in the world. Religious conflict is currently the main cause of war and many disagreements between people.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Awakenings Institute<\/a>, the non-profit organization that created this website, is joining a growing force of individuals who recognize the need for a new direction. We seek common ground, where we can join together to create a better world, one where love and joy prevail.<\/p>\n

How the Golden Rule Provides Common Ground<\/h3>\n

Like so many things of value, the key is in plain view. The solutions for many of society\u2019s problems can be found in the same institutions that divide us and wreak havoc on the world.<\/p>\n

Consider this beautiful form of the Golden Rule drawn from native American spirituality:<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not wrong or hate your neighbor. For it is not he who you wrong, but yourself.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll find other variations from around the world below. With all the conflict, it might be difficult to believe that this simple principle is at the heart of the teachings of all of the great world religions, along with many philosophical and humanitarian traditions.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a fact. The Golden Rule is a central focus in Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, Native American Spirituality, Hinduism, Taoism, Sufism, and more. It is also found in the philosophies of Epictetus, Plato, and Socrates. You can even find it in the timeless writings of success gurus like Napoleon Hill, who devoted an entire chapter to the Golden Rule in his book The Law of Success<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The Unifying Value of the Golden Rule<\/h2>\n

All of the religions have versions of the Golden Rule. Imagine what might be possible if people around the world could make this unifying principle a personal value. With it being built on love, the world would be quite a different place.<\/p>\n

As with all meaningful change, it can only happen one person at a time and each of us has to decide “It starts with me.” People of different faiths and philosophies can benefit from it.<\/p>\n

Value Statements From the Major Religions<\/h3>\n

Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed World Faith:<\/strong> \u201cAnd if thine eyes be turned towards justice, choose thou for thy neighbor that which thou choosest for thyself.\u201d Epistle to the Son of the Wolf<\/p>\n

Brahmanism:<\/strong> \u201cThis is the sum of Dharma [duty]: Do naught unto others which would cause you pain if done to you\u201d. Mahabharata, 5:1517 \u201d<\/p>\n

Buddhism:<\/strong> Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful.\u201d Udana-Varga 5:18<\/p>\n

Christianity:<\/strong> \u201cAnd as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.\u201d Luke 6:31, King James Version.<\/p>\n

Confucianism:<\/strong> \u201cDo not do to others what you do not want them to do to you\u201d Analects 15:23<\/p>\n

Ancient Egyptian:<\/strong> \u201cDo for one who may do for you, that you may cause him thus to do.\u201d The Tale of the Eloquent Peasant, 109 \u2013 110 Translated by R.B. Parkinson. The original dates to 1970 to 1640 BCE and may be the earliest version ever written.<\/p>\n

Hinduism:<\/strong> \u201cOne should not behave towards others in a way which is disagreeable to oneself.\u201d Mencius Vii.A.<\/p>\n

Humanism:<\/strong> \u201cDon\u2019t do things you wouldn\u2019t want to have done to you, British Humanist Society.<\/p>\n

Islam:<\/strong> \u201cNone of you [truly] believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.\u201d Number 13 of Imam \u201cAl-Nawawi\u2019s Forty Hadiths.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jainism:<\/strong> \u201cA man should wander about treating all creatures as he himself would be treated. \u201cSutrakritanga 1.11.33<\/p>\n

Judaism:<\/strong> \u201cWhat is hateful to you, do not to your fellow man. This is the law: all the rest is commentary.\u201d Talmud, Shabbat 31a.<\/p>\n

Native American Spirituality:<\/strong> \u201cDo not wrong or hate your neighbor. For it is not he who you wrong, but yourself.\u201d Pima proverb.<\/p>\n

Roman Pagan Religion:<\/strong> \u201cThe law imprinted on the hearts of all men is to love the members of society as themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shinto:<\/strong> \u201cThe heart of the person before you is a mirror. See there your own form.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sikhism:<\/strong> \u201cDon\u2019t create enmity with anyone as God is within everyone.\u201d Guru Arjan Devji 259<\/p>\n

Sufism:<\/strong> \u201cThe basis of Sufism is consideration of the hearts and feelings of others. If you haven\u2019t the will to gladden someone\u2019s heart, then at least beware lest you hurt someone\u2019s heart, for on our path, no sin exists but this.\u201d Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh, Master of the Nimatullahi Sufi Order.<\/p>\n

Taoism:<\/strong> \u201cRegard your neighbor\u2019s gain as your own gain, and your neighbor\u2019s loss as your own loss.\u201d T\u2019ai Shang Kan Ying P\u2019ien.<\/p>\n

Unitarian:<\/strong> \u201cWe affirm and promote respect for the interdependent of all existence of which we are a part.\u201d Unitarian principles.<\/p>\n

Wicca:<\/strong> \u201cAn it harm no one, do what thou wilt\u201d (i.e. do what ever you will, as long as it harms nobody, including yourself). One\u2019s will is to be carefully thought out in advance of action. This is called the Wiccan Rede.<\/p>\n

Yoruba:<\/strong> (Nigeria): \u201cOne going to take a pointed stick to pinch a baby bird should first try it on himself to feel how it hurts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoroastrianism:<\/strong> \u201cThat nature alone is good which refrains from doing unto another whatsoever is not good for itself\u201d. Dadistan-i-dinik 94:5<\/p>\n

Value Statements from Great Philisophers<\/h3>\n

Epictetus:<\/strong> \u201cWhat you would avoid suffering yourself, seek not to impose on others.\u201d (circa 100 CE)<\/p>\n

Kant:<\/strong> \u201cAct as if the maxim of thy action were to become by thy will a universal law of nature.\u201d<\/p>\n

Plato:<\/strong> \u201cMay I do to others as I would that they should do unto me.\u201d (Greece; 4th century BCE)<\/p>\n

Example From a Moral\/Ethical System<\/h3>\n

Humanism:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026critical intelligence, infused by a sense of human caring, is the best method that humanity has for resolving problems. Reason should be balanced with compassion and empathy and the whole person fulfilled.\u201d Humanist Manifesto II; Ethics section.<\/p>\n

The Golden Rule: A Positive Value for Humanity<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s dumbfounding that religion so often features its shadow side<\/strong>, fostering divisions, hatred, and fear rather than connections, acceptance, and love. With so much focus on fostering dogma, rigid rules, conflict and war, you\u2019d think the idea of focusing on love and compassion was out of the norm. This distorted side reflects the stress in the world and ignores the higher truths that form the foundation of the world\u2019s wisdom traditions.<\/p>\n

The past is the past and there\u2019s no time like the present to change course.<\/h3>\n

Our most golden opportunity is to make this value our own and create an uplifting presence that can help the world to rise out of the current patterns of fear and division.<\/p>\n

To create a more harmonious world, it serves us to acknowledge the world\u2019s wisdom traditions and the personal values they express, centering on love, joy, compassion, and enlightenment.<\/p>\n

Each of the world\u2019s wisdom traditions is part of a larger whole and each approach adds valuable pieces to this whole. If we open our minds and our hearts, we can explore the ways each spiritual tradition has valuable knowledge and practices that can benefit us all. Each can also benefit from pieces of the puzzle that can be filled in with the wisdom offered by others.<\/p>\n

Personal Values as Your Guiding Light<\/h2>\n

The world needs you.<\/strong> The question now is, how do you see yourself playing a part in this simple shift to love and happiness that can transform the world?<\/p>\n
