This is an important habit, but there’s more. Your 30-day challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to look for something positive in everyone you encounter. From a holistic perspective, every person is a wonderful spiritual being.
Most don’t know it and their behavior may not yet reflect the beauty that lies within, but you can choose to see it. Look for something positive in people on the street, in the office, everywhere you go. Smile. Say hello (even to strangers). And when the opportunity presents itself, offer a genuine compliment.
The Secret to Confidence and Self Esteem
The key here involves taking your attention off yourself and your concerns about what other people are thinking about you. When you are thinking positive thoughts about other people, you can’t be worried about yourself.
The habit of looking for something positive in every person is simple and profound. In his book The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons, success pioneer Napoleon Hill said that the habit of openly and enthusiastically praising the good qualities in others “will soon reward you with a feeling of self-respect and gratitude from others that will modify your entire personality.”
Hill further stated that “those whom you praise will see, in you, the qualities that you see in them.” Their gratitude will make you feel even better about yourself and you will be likely to seek more opportunities to share genuine compliments with the people you encounter.
When we experimented with this idea, we were amazed with the results! We discovered that when we took our minds off ourselves and brightened the days of those around us, we, too, received the benefits. Our self-consciousness diminished, and we began to enjoy other people more.
There is a common phrase “You get back what you give” and this is certainly true here. With this simple approach, you will find that you naturally enjoy people more and appreciate yourself more. What could be better?
How to Remember the Challenge
One of the stumbling blocks with a challenge like this is remembering to do it. If you are not currently in the habit of connecting in positive ways with other people (including people you don’t yet know, here’s what to do. Get out some post-it notes and write this phrase on them:
“I see the positive and the potential in everyone, including myself.”
This may be one of the most important things you can do if your want to coach yourself to a better life. Whenever you see this message, use it as a reminder to reach out in positive ways to others.
