Is it Your Guidance?

After more than 30 years of exploring spirituality —both personally and alongside countless students and clients—we’ve noticed something interesting. Most people are receiving their own guidance. The struggle comes in in trusting and truly following it.

Somewhere between the download and the follow-through, things interfere. What felt like a clear inner “yes” turns into confusion, second-guessing, or a detour down an entirely different road.

So how do you know if what’s pulling you is truly your guidance— or something else you misinterpret as inner guidance.

Here are three of the most common ways we’ve seen people get sidetracked.

1. Mistaking Excitement for Guidance

Take Jill. She felt “guided” to study a particular healing modality and began with real enthusiasm— scanning materials, courses, research.

She gets started with one course that felt particularly relevant. But after a few days, the spark fades. Next she comes across another course that feels even more thrilling, and off she goes, chasing that new shiny thing instead.

This guidance (or impulse) can be hard t evaluate, because excitement feels like confirmation. It isn’t. Excitement is often just novelty—the nervous system lighting up at something new.

True guidance runs deep. It doesn’t need a fresh dopamine hit every few days to keep you engaged; it keeps showing up quietly, even after the initial thrill wears off.

The tell: If your enthusiasm disappears when something newer and shinier appears, you were likely following excitement, not guidance.

2. Letting Life’s Busyness Override Guidance

Then there’s Lyn. Unlike Jill, Lyn doesn’t get distracted by something shinier. She sticks with one area of study for a good while, genuinely engaged.

But then life happens. A family member needs her; the calendar fills in around her. Before she knows it, her studies slip to the bottom of the list. Eventually she puts them on hold, not because her interest faded, but because she has dedicated all her time elsewhere.

To be clear, the are times, like caring for an ill loved one, that will take time and priorities can shift. Here’s a key overlooked point. This need not be an all-or-nothing choice.  I can too both, with perhaps a different time juggling.  I can attend to my family and still pursue my soul-inspired studies.

This pattern is easy to miss because it doesn’t look like distraction—it looks like responsibility. Of course work and family matter. But guidance that gets permanently shelved every time something else demands attention was never really given room to matter. There’s a difference between a temporary pause and a quiet abandonment that repeats itself every time life gets busy.

The tell: Ask whether you’re taking a genuine break or whether “life got busy” and your spiritual studies, or heart-centered pursuits get lost in the shuffle.

3. Mistaking Obstacles for Signs

The third pattern shows up after someone has genuinely committed to their guidance—and then hits a snag.

Maybe it’s an issue using technology like accessing a clunky website, a login that won’t cooperate, a course platform they can’t quite figure out. Or maybe they try to book the trip or workshop their guidance pointed them toward, and their credit card gets declined. Rather than troubleshooting the practical issue in front of them, they read it as a cosmic message: this must not be meant for me.

Here’s the thing. Your inner guidance and life’s logistics work on two different levels. A confusing website or a temporary credit card decline is usually just that: a confusing website or a temporary card decline.

Treating every mundane obstacle as a spiritual stop sign gives ordinary friction far more authority than it deserves. Without awareness, it can be an easy way to talk yourself out of something you were genuinely called to do.

Also that challenge can serve as a test to follow through on your guidance.

The tell: Ask whether the obstacle is actually insurmountable, or just inconvenient and unfamiliar. Real guidance stays with you, regardless of everyday challenges or sudden obstacles that you face.

The Common Thread

Look closely at all three patterns: chasing the next shiny object, letting life’s busyness quietly take over, or reading a technical glitch as a sign to stop. Here’s what’s important to recognize. Each one can be a way of missing your real guidance.

Often, what begins as a genuine, deep, intuitive prompt gets thwarted. So why do we hit a roadblock? It’s not because the guidance was wrong, but because something else got in the way: a brighter distraction, a demanding calendar, an unfamiliar obstacle.

The guidance itself is still there. We simply stop following it, which weakens the signal.  And then we can start to doubt our own guidance amidst all the noise.

Aspects of Your Inner Soulful Guidance

So if excitement, busyness, and obstacles aren’t reliable guides, what does true guidance actually feel like? A few markers tend to show up again and again:

  • A deep, calm knowingness— a steadiness that doesn’t need convincing.
  • Sometimes excitement and joy are sparked— but as a byproduct, not just as an adrenaline rush feel-good message.
  • Feeling right at a deep level, beyond the intellect and words—it can’t always be explained, only sensed.
  • A quiet persistence over time— it keeps returning, even after distractions, delays, or setbacks.
  • A sense of expansion rather than contraction— it tends to open you up, rather than tighten you with fear or urgency.
  • Draws on inner senses (inner seeing, hearing, sensing)
  • It doesn’t depend on ease— it can remain intact even when the path forward includes friction, inconvenience, or a learning curve.
  • A loving, calm presence

None of these markers are foolproof on their own, and real guidance can absolutely include a moment of excitement or a bump in the road along the way.

Here’s you mission to align with  your soul: be receptive to that deeper, steadier knowing underneath the noise, rather than mistaking the noise itself for the message.

The more you practice this kind of discernment, the easier it becomes to recognize your own guidance— and to keep following it, even when a shiny object, a busy week, or a stubborn website tries to convince you otherwise.
