Chapter One: Getting Started at Getting Thru

This is just a glimpse of what the information in this book can help you to do.

You are about to explore some emotional clearing techniques that many consider a modern miracle. They are based on a series of discoveries that some psychologists consider to be among the most important breakthroughs in their field in the twentieth century. EFT, the Emotional Freedom Techniques, is a group of techniques that just about anyone can learn to use to release the stuck emotions that prevent them from experiencing happiness and moving forward toward their goals in life. These techniques were developed and introduced in 1995 by Gary Craig and Adrienne Fowlie, based on the work of psychologist Dr. Roger Callahan.

In its short history, EFT has already helped thousands of people with a vast array of common emotions, including:

  • Stress and anxiety.
  • Anger and frustration.
  • Depression.
  • All kinds of fears and phobias.
  • Negative memories and inner child issues.
  • Self-doubt.
  • Guilt, grief, confusion and just about any other emotion imaginable, including those icky, yucky and generally awful feelings you can’t even find a name for.

Amazingly, the benefits do not end there. EFT is not limited to releasing painful emotions. Consider these possibilities:

  • Reduce physical cravings for substances like chocolate and cigarettes.
  • Relieve pain.
  • Overcome insomnia.
  • Increase your overall well-being.

  • Speak up in public situations and with those you are not able to communicate with now.

  • Build up the courage to try the things you have always wanted to do, but never dared.

There are almost countless of examples of people who have recovered with ease from emotions that have disturbed them for years using EFT. It has been shown to be effective where other techniques have failed. It has even been used success-fully for relieving a variety of physical symptoms like head-aches and back pain, along with conditions such as insomnia. EFT is particularly helpful when the physical symptoms are directly linked to emotions like stress and anxiety. The success rate reported by the developers of EFT when dealing with emotions is between 80 percent and 100 percent. This has been our experience as well. With physical conditions, the success rate is lower, but many people suffering from a wide variety of conditions have received tremendous benefits from the use of EFT. In many cases, the effects are permanent and, if not, the procedure may be easily repeated.

EFT is also gentle and works quickly. Most EFT users are able to release troubling emotions like fear, anxiety, anger, and stress in a short time, often within a single session or several days or weeks compared with months or years of traditional therapy. These types of techniques are so effective that their originator, Dr. Callahan, reportedly went bankrupt when he began using his techniques with his clients, because they re-covered so quickly.

One of the things we appreciate most is EFT’s versatility. When you have mastered these skills, it is almost like having superpowers. You will have tools that you can use in just about any situation. For instance, if you are going into an important meeting or interview and feel anxious or afraid, you can just sit in your car or duck quickly into the restroom and do some EFT. It works wonders and doesn’t require any special equip-ment, so you can use it virtually anywhere.

The Getting Thru Techniques

“Getting Thru to Your Emotions” is about connecting in a pro-found way with the truth of who you are. In addition to EFT, this book includes techniques drawn from our extensive experience with Hypnotherapy, NLP, Kinesiology, Reiki and other holistic healing modalities. Refer to the Glossary for more information about these approaches. The unique techniques we have developed form the heart of the Getting Thru Approach. They enhance any healing process and help you to bring more awareness to whatever you are going through.

Through our experience, we have come to regard life as a journey of self-discovery and find that there are always deeper levels of ourselves to explore. Each of us is here with lessons to learn and a purpose to fulfill. As we step forward on our journeys, we face challenges that help us to learn these lessons and grow as individuals. This in turn helps us to expand our awareness collectively as a society.

The combination of EFT and the Getting Thru Techniques can help you to move rapidly along on this journey by releasing your fears, unresolved emotions and all types of limitations, so you can experience a life filled with joy, love and freedom to fulfill your heart’s true desires. To simplify, we will refer to the Getting Thru Techniques as GTT.

When we began our own exploration of personal and spiritual growth in the 1970’s, there was nothing like EFT or GTT. Like most people, we thought that true growth and enlightenment were extremely difficult to achieve and only possible for people like monks and mystics in far-off caves or monasteries.

Times change, as does human potential. One of the greatest challenges with EFT is opening the mind enough to consider that it is possible to overcome stubborn emotional patterns in a short time. People often come to us believing that their emotional patterns are going to be difficult and painful to release. The limiting beliefs are often more challenging than the emotions themselves.

Craig and Fowlie report having similar experiences in their Emotional Freedom Techniques Manual, where they state: “You hold in your hand a major innovation. As you will see, it is based on the soundest of scientific principles. But because it is so dramatically different from ‘conventional wisdom,’ it is consistently and understandably greeted with skepticism. EFT is not alone in this. Other innovations have met with similar attitudes.” They go on to list a number of examples of these limiting beliefs, such as “Everything that can be invented has been in-vented,” a quote from Charles H. Duell, the Director of the U.S. Patent Office, from 1899. That obviously was not true at the end of the 19th century and certainly is not true as we venture into the 21st century. By keeping an open mind to these techniques, you can allow the results to speak for themselves.

With techniques like EFT and GTT, we are on the ground floor of what Craig calls a “healing high-rise.” We also see our-selves on the edge of a new era, an age of self-realization. We are at the point in the evolution of humanity when every individual has the opportunity to attain wholeness and achieve the love, joy, and freedom that we all deeply long for. With this in mind, it is no surprise that approaches like EFT and GTT are beginning to emerge, creating almost unlimited possibilities for anyone who wants to expand and grow.
