Mental and Emotional Blocks: How “Set Points” Keep You Stuck

By Jane Mountrose, with Phillip Mountrose

Have you ever put effort into losing weight, improving your financial future, or realizing a dream and ended up back where you started? Nothing could be more frustrating. This kind of situation can also take a hit on your self-esteem, leaving you feeling like a failure.

Maybe you want to have better health, more prosperity, or supportive relationships, but somehow your dream seems to evade you at every turn. If this is happening, you may have encountered an emotional or mental block, a “set point” that keeps you stuck. We know how annoying this can be, because we’ve been there ourselves in our careers, our health, and our ability to prosper doing the work we love.

Our struggle with set points took us on an enlightening journey where we discovered the keys we and so many people with dreams of better lives are seeking.

How Mental and Emotional Blocks Keep You Stuck

We recently addressed the concept of shifting set points to eliminate emotional and mental blocks in our Lighten Up and Lose Weight for Life Program. This is a concept few people recognize even though it is essential to your success, in relation to your weight and a number of other key areas of life like your overall health, prosperity, and relationships.

Researchers have also studied the impact of set points in relation to happiness and success coaches would quickly add that people have set points in relation to their ability to create success. This is one of the reasons coaches are so important, not just in sports, but in relation to your ability to realize your dreams.

The term “set point” was coined in the 1980’s, when researchers discovered that each of us has a weight set point. This set point is viewed as an underlying reason diets typically fail. It is default mechanism that acts like a boomerang, returning us to the same place over and over regardless of what we do. A woman who weighs 200 pounds, for instance, probably has a set point right around that weight.

New thought pioneer Florence Shin described set points this way:

“The game of life is the game of boomerangs. Our thoughts, deeds, and words return to us sooner or later, with astounding accuracy.”

When this 200 pound woman goes on a diet and reduces her food intake, she may start to lose weight, but after awhile, maybe a week, month, or six months, she will tend to boomerang back to her set point. Trying to lose weight under these conditions is a struggle, like going against the tide. You may have noticed this yourself in relation to your weight, your health, prosperity, and more.

The key here is understanding how the workings of the deeper recesses of the mind run our lives. If something inside us is saying that things never work out for us, our outer lives will validate this belief. The frustrating part is that we be fully engaged in succeeding with an important dream, completely unaware that something inside us is determined to sabotage our efforts.

This underscores the importance of uncovering what your set point is and why it is where it is. Accessing the emotional and mental block, or in many cases blocks, requires some exploration into the deeper recesses of the mind, into areas that may be largely unconscious in most cases. There may be a number of factors at play and it’s critical to uncover what is blocking you if you want to move freely forward toward your dreams.

The Value of Shifting Set Points Once and For All

Clearing underlying mental and emotional blocks and changing set points can be challenging, but the results are well worth the effort. And when you really think about it, what other choice do you have if you want to live life to the fullest?

Set Point QuoteThe good news is that once you identify the emotional and mental blocks, you can change them. I confirmed this myself with weight challenges. Whenever I would try to lose weight, something in me became terrified that I might starve. My body would understandably do whatever it could to prevent that from happening. This created struggle and with my best efforts, I would consistently find myself back at my original weight sooner or later. Maybe something similar has happened to you.

In a sense, my body was right when it came to losing weight. We’ve seen how dieting creates the same conditions as starvation in the body, and this was a validation for me. The critical point was that I uncovered a deep fear of death that was triggered every time I started to lose weight. This kept my set point at a level that was not supportive of my overall well-being.

How to Clear the Emotional and Mental Blocks

Some people would say that it isn’t possible to change your set point, but we don’t agree. Most would admit that it generally takes time and a consistent approach. Regardless, we’ve found ways to accelerate the process that produce transformational changes in people’s lives.

There are many reasons why a person might become uncomfortable losing weight, becoming more prosperous, creating optimal health, developing supportive relationships, and more, regardless of the best of intentions. Each person is unique. Fortunately, with holistic approaches for identifying and clearing blocks to success on all levels – body, emotions, mind, and spirit – you can get all the parts of yourself working together in support of the whole.

Once you shift your set point, rather than going against the tide, the path to your dreams feels more like swimming forward on a calm lake with clear water. You are aware what is happening under the surface and understand how to move forward more easily, even when you encounter some turbulence along the way.

The Tools We Use with Mental and Emotional Blocks

The key is to identify what’s happening so you can shift set points that keep you stuck once and for all.

In our use of kinesiology (muscle testing) and state-of-the-art clearing techniques (plus more than twenty-five years of experience) we have pinpointed the keys for identifying and shifting our clients’ set points. Kinesiology is a holistic process that can identify set points and much more by testing the strength of muscles in the body. We’ve found that people who find themselves struggling a specific issue or a host of issues generally have mental and emotional blocks that keep them stuck.

With this in mind, our work focuses on identifying specifically what’s blocking progress and shifting the set point so you can realize your dreams with greater ease. This is one of the most rewarding parts of our work. In some cases, we have released people from struggles that have kept them stuck for years, so they could at long last move forward more freely in the direction of their dreams.

“Healing may not be so much about getting better, as about letting go of everything that isn’t you – all of the expectations, all of the beliefs – and becoming who you are.”

– Rachel Naomi Remen
