As Aristotle suggested:

“Happiness depends upon ourselves.”

Why Is More Love and Happiness So Important?

Stress is approaching epidemic levels. With our increasingly rapid pace, it always seems like there is too much to do and too much information flying around to make any sense of it. According to recent stress statistics, more than 70% of the population suffers regularly from psychological and/or physical symptoms of stress.

Living with stress is so common, many consider it to be normal, but the body tells a different story. Stress isn’t just unpleasant. It’s a proven fact that it reduces happiness, shortens lives, and even results in death in some cases. Stated simply, it’s a killer!

Succumbing to stress can be debilitating. It’s a state of pressure, tension, or strain that is destructive on all levels – physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Here, too, the statistics are staggering. Some estimate that around 90% of all illness is stress related.

Stress-related conditions include heart disease, asthma, obesity, diabetes, headaches, depression, gastrointestinal problems, accelerated aging, and even premature death. Medications can ease the symptoms, but they are not cures, and they come with a wide range of unpleasant and sometimes dangerous side effects. They can also be addictive.

Unfortunately, many people don’t see a way out. The situation just keeps getting worse and they don’t know where to turn. Statements like “This is the way it is” and “this is the way I am” seem reasonable under these conditions and anyone can justify them. Sadly, most people believe that they have to accept stress and settle for unfulfilling lives.

Discovering the Keys to More Love and Happiness

At its best, life is to be lived, to feel fully alive, happy, and well each day (or at least most days). Who wouldn’t want this? From this perspective, you could say that stress and happiness are opposing ideas. One takes you further from what you want while the other opens you to being more successful in every way. This is valuable information for coaching and for life.

Occasional stress is not the problem. In fact, stress has its place when you’re in danger. There is also positive stress associated with the excitement of doing something new. But this is not what is happening to most people.

Prolonged stress is a habitual mental, emotional, and physical response to overwhelm and discomfort with what’s happening in our lives. It relates a lot to the way we habitually perceive and respond to situations. Mental anguish, anger, fear, jealousy, disorganization, hurry, worry, and basically anything that prevents us from feeling peaceful and joyful can create prolonged stress.

By comparison, when we respond positively to the situations and challenges that are before us, stress is not an issue. Feelings of happiness and well-being have a positive impact on every aspect of life. This is the goal and the benefits are more profoundly important than most people realize.

Key #1: Simplify and let go of the things you can’t change.

Without awareness, we can become distracted from the things that are really important. When we clear our minds of the many things that are beyond our control, we can release a lot of unnecessary stress.

Key#2: Breathe love.

It’s easy to find oneself in a continuous negative momentum of hurry, confusion, and worry that can spoil the whole day. The key here is this: when you notice this happening, let go (key#1). Then focus for a moment on taking a few nice deep loving breaths of fresh air and allowing your mind to relax.

As you breathe, focus on being in your body and letting go of any momentums that might be pulling you away from simply being. If you’re busy, this doesn’t really take any time, but it can make a big difference in the way you feel.

Imagine sending the loving breaths into every cell of the body. Every part of you deserves love and you may sense that your cells really appreciate it. In their book Happiness Genes, James D. Baird and Laurie Nadel report that “The way we perceive our environment controls our health and fate.”

Key#3: Intend to experience joy and ease.

As you let go and breathe (key#2), you can also focus on supportive words like “joy and ease.” Your intention to enjoy each day is powerful. It can completely change your life.

The Transition From Stress to Love and Happiness

Prolonged stress generally indicates that we’re focusing on the wrong things, and our quality of life is suffering as a result. We’ve been overtaken by negative energy and it feels bad! It’s literally bathing our cells in toxic, feel bad chemicals.

Happiness has an opposite effect, bathing your cells in feel good chemicals. Anyone can start to shift negative perspectives by perceiving and responding to situations differently. Notice how good it feels to imagine that your life is going in a positive direction (with joy and ease).

Now consider what might happen on a larger scale if more and more people chose to take look at things differently. Imagine how the world could change if everyone was happier and more loving.

More and more people are seeing that love and happiness could be the ultimate solution to most of the challenges we face in this world. This shouldn’t come as such a big surprise. The wisdom teachings that have come to us through the ages shared this view. Aristotle put it this way:

“Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life,
the whole aim and end of human existence.”

The Role of Joy and Ease in Creating More Love and Happiness

You can experience a life characterized by joy and ease if you believe you can. If you say this to yourself often, it will reprogram your belief about how things work in your reality. It’s a self-fulfilling prophesy that will make you feel more self-empowered. It will make your life easier and attract good things to you.

On a related note, feeling blessed also connects you with gratitude, a powerful quality of the heart. Imagine what this simple shift in perspective can make for you and those you love. Everyone can benefit from some simple ways to lift their spirits and enjoy life to the fullest  and you can be a valuable part of the change.
